Narrative Therapy
“The stories we tell shape the lives we live.”

Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy is a collaborative, strengths-based approach that helps you explore and reshape the stories you hold about yourself and your life. It is grounded in the idea that people are not their problems, and that by shifting how experiences are understood and described, new possibilities for meaning and change can emerge.
At Evergreen Counselling Collective, Narrative Therapy supports you in “externalizing” problems—seeing them as separate from your identity—so they no longer define who you are. From there, we work together to identify alternative stories that highlight your strengths, resilience, values, and moments of resistance to the problem.
Sessions often involve exploring how certain narratives have been shaped, identifying “unique outcomes” where things were different than the problem story suggests, and strengthening preferred ways of seeing yourself and your life. This process can also include drawing on supportive relationships and experiences that reinforce your evolving story.
Narrative Therapy can be helpful for concerns such as depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, identity exploration, and self-esteem. It offers a respectful and empowering space to re-author your story in a way that reflects growth, agency, and meaning.
