Motivational Interviewing
“Change does not happen by being told; it happens by being heard.”
— William R. Miller
MI
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, client-centred approach that helps you explore and strengthen your own motivation for change. It focuses on your strengths, values, and goals, while supporting confidence and self-efficacy so that meaningful, lasting change can emerge from within.
At Evergreen Counselling Collective, MI is a supportive, respectful process where your autonomy is central. Together with your therapist, you’ll explore what change might look like for you, what feels important, and what may be getting in the way. Rather than being directed or told what to do, you are guided through conversations that help clarify your own reasons for change and build confidence in your ability to take steps forward.
Sessions typically involve active listening, open-ended questions, reflections, affirmations, and gentle exploration of “change talk”—the part of you that is considering growth or movement in a new direction. This approach helps reduce ambivalence, strengthen motivation, and support clearer, values-aligned decision-making.
MI can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including health behaviour changes, substance use, chronic health management, parenting challenges, career decisions, and navigating life transitions. It is a flexible approach that meets you where you are and supports you in moving at a pace that feels manageable and authentic.
